Action for Climate Change Programme - Auckland

As part of World Environment Day celebrations, the Action for Climate Change Programme proposes a series of activities to engage non-traditional volunteers in a range of locations (Auckland, Hutt Valley and Punakaiki) on World Environment Day and in the week of World Environment Day.
The programme aims to help the Auckland Regional Council facilitate greater involvement from local community groups and organisations in and around Auckland.
Engagement of non-traditional volunteers (ie, travellers, backpackers, disengaged members of local communities and corporate staff volunteers) will implement a range of practical conservation projects and activities and complementary activities in the week with pledges made by participating individual community members committing to further actions into the future.
The World Environment Day international slogan for 2008 is Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy in recognition that climate change is becoming the defining issue of our era.

Green Ribbon Awards

As part of World Environment Day celebrations the Green Ribbon Awards are presented by the Minister for the Environment to celebrate the outstanding contributions of individuals, organisations and businesses to sustaining, protecting and enhancing New Zealand’s environment. 2008 marks the 18th year the awards have run.
Nominations for the Green Ribbon Awards are now open. You can visit http://www.mfe.govt.nz/withyou/awards/green-ribbon.html for more information about the awards and the process of making a nomination. Nominations close on 7 April 2008.
Award recipients will be recognised at a special ceremony at the Wellington Town hall on Tuesday 3 June.
The Green Ribbon Awards acknowledge individuals, iwi and hapu, organisations, and businesses who are helping to ‘kick the carbon habit’ through their environmental efforts.
Art for the Environment Exhibition – Moving Towards a Balanced Earth

Venue: Te Papa, Cable Street, Wellington
As part of World Environment Day celebrations the Ministry for the Environment in partnership with the Natural World Museum, the United Nations Environment programme and Te Papa will present Art for the Environment: Moving Towards a Balanced Earth, an art exhibition featuring works of art from 25 artists representing 17 countries.
The free exhibition will be housed at Te Papa and will be open to all members of the public. The exhibition will open on World Environment Day, 5 June, and run until 7 September.
The exhibition is designed to utilise the universal language of art as a catalyst to unite people in action and thought, and to empower individuals, communities, and leaders to focus on environmental values across social, economic and political realms. The exhibited art will have an over-arching climate change theme.

Junk to Green Funk Art Auction

As part of World Environment Day celebrations 31 Trade Aid shops around New Zealand have approached a local artist to create a piece of work that converts junk into a piece of art. The artwork will be showcased in Trade Aid shops during Fair Trade Fortnight, 3 May – 18 May 2008.
Following Fair Trade Fortnight the artwork will be sold at an auction to be held from 4.30pm on Tuesday 3 June at the Wellington Town Hall, prior to the Green Ribbon Award ceremony. The auction will raise money for environmental education in New Zealand.
The artwork will be made from discarded and recycled materials – therefore reducing the affect the pieces have on the environment and aligning with the theme of world Environment Day 2008 – ‘Kick the Carbon Habit’.

International Children’s Painting Competition Exhibition

Children’s Painting Competition on the Environment is organized annually by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Japan-based Foundation for Global Peace and Environment (FGPE), Bayer and Nikon Corporation.
The competition has been held since 1991 and has received over 190,000 entries from children in over 100 countries. The 2007/2008 competition was open from 24 September 2007 to 15 January 2008.
The 2007/2008 competition focussed on ‘Climate Change: actions we can take now to reduce our negative impact’ and attracted entries worldwide, including 49 entries from New Zealand. The children’s paintings focus on actions to reduce climate change such as using renewable energy, introducing energy saving light bulbs at home, sharing vehicles and using public transport, and planting trees.
During the week of World Environment Day an exhibition at Te Papa will display 50 of these global and regional paintings.
The free exhibition will be housed at Te Papa’s ‘Inspiration Station’ from Friday 30 May – Sunday 8 June and is open to all members of the public.
Weed Swap at Civic Square
Cost: Free

Venue: Civic Square, Willis St, Wellington
As part of World Environment Day celebrations, members of the public will bring in garden weeds and swap them for free native plants.
People can swap one weed for one native plant per person.
To encourage people to “Kick the Habit” anyone with a bike or a bus ticket will be given two free native plants per weed.
Biodegradable bags will be provided for the plants and all weeds will be disposed of at a ‘green waste’ site.

Canterbury World Environment Day Events
“Step Up Canterbury” – World Environment Day 2008

As part of World Environment Day celebrations the project incorporates two events. The first is a Celebratory Expo/Auction and a promotion of sustainable transport, the second event is a live cross to the Hillary Institute Conference for a presentation on Climate Change.
The Expo/Auction will celebrate sustainability successes and encourage residents to take next steps. A ‘funny money’ auction, exhibitions, seminars, speakers and children’s activities will be held. Organisations and businesses will be asked to donate environmentally friendly items for auction (eg solar heaters, heat pumps) in return for exhibit space and exposure in the marketing campaign.
Educational seminars will be held and the documentary “11th Hour” will be shown. There will be story-telling for school children, competitions, school presentations and a debate focused on ‘CO2 – Kick the Habit’. During the day, customers at service stations will be handed a tree seedling carrying a note to gently remind them that tree planting can offset fuel emissions.

Future Proof Energy Expo

As part of World Environment Day celebrations there will be an expo with talks, displays and demonstrations given by experts such as Landcare Research scientists, suppliers of energy saving products including solar water heating, solar panels, wind generation and insulation.
Also a bus tour of homes in the area that already have solar power, energy generation or other ways of reducing their energy use.

Waikato World Environment Day Events
Carbon Wise Whaingaroa

For World Environment Day a community wide tree planting project will be held whereby one tree will be planted for every three wheelie bins that have been filled with paper over the past year.
We envisage that the school will plant the trees on site and we will give the businesses a number of choices and they will be able to nominate where they want the trees planted. Sites will be chosen through consultation.
A community and school wide education campaign in the run up and during the week will also be run regarding climate change, carbon emissions and the benefit of planting trees and recycling paper.

Nelson / Tasman World Environment Day Events
Nelson / Tasman ‘Less-Cars’ Day

Region: Nelson, New Zealand
As part of World Environment Day celebrations in partnership with Tasman District Council a car-less day will be promoted.
The objective is to raise awareness of transport as a factor in reducing carbon emissions, and to demonstrate alternative transport options to our community.
This will serve as a platform for long term behaviour changes and will support the Council objective of introducing enhanced public transport services by 2009.
The event will include a free bus service between Richmond and Nelson, car pooling incentives and cycling promotions, as well as street events celebrating the day, including free breakfasts for all participants (cyclists, bus commuters and car poolers).
