Description

The first part of a passive solar house designed by Roger Buck Associates of Christchurch, constructed by Hendersons of Timaru. Winner (for builder) of Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Awards in regional Master Builders' Awards 2008
On-site waste treatment designed by EcoEng includes a planted wetland between septic tank and pressurised dripper line stages. Green roof of native plants, earth-sheltered (no windows) at East, external insulation on a high thermal mass for temperature stability - little temperature variation bteween day and night. Double glazed, low emission glass with insulating steel-PVC frames by NK windows. Real timber kitchen, avoiding MDF. Tiled floor on concrete, with electric under-floor heating in use only at cooler side of house. Solar air heater in design for 2008 installation on North wall. Natural ventilation. Oamaru limestone cladding. Extensive NZ native planting as Southern shelter.

Surrounding land includes pasture, organic vegetable garden, heritage pip fruit orchard and 3ha bush restoration - a long term project!

Low VOC paints

I'd like to know more about the low VOC paints that you used. What brand/type did you use? How has is lasted? THanks.

Just noticed this post. I used Resene low VOC on my house in Drury. It seems to last well but I had serious problems with keeping the wet edge going, used their glycol additive but still not good. I don't want to start an attack on Resene paints as they have done a lot in the VOC field.
