Slow growing Pohutukawa eventually reach 15 - 20 metres in height showing beautiful red flowers on maturing from December to January.

The Pohutukawa has special significance for Maori. Some legends tell the story of Tawhaki the young Maori warrior and his attempt to find help in heaven to avenge his fathers death. . However, Tawhaki fell to earth and the crimson flowers of the Pohutukawa Tree are said to represent his blood.

Best suited for planting in the Northern part of the North Island however the Pohutukawa is known to grow in other coastal areas throughout New Zealand.
