My brother, whio lives in Victoria spoke with a giovt employee whose "company car" was one of those hybrid toy o taa pious. the employee calimed that the cars are a joke...heavy and use way more petrol when in that mode than a similar capacity petrol-engined car.

After seeing the dovcumentary "Who Killed the Electric car?" (www.freedocumentaries.org) I cannot understand why any maker would bother with the hybrid concept. Clearly a true electric car was made back in the 90's by GM and had much longer range and great rodaspeed. Most of its owners loved the vehicle and wanted to buy them outrright when the lease was up, but those cars were all recalled at lease end and destroyed. The engine makers (petrol and diesel) were blamed for the electric cars' demise.en

It is difficult for me to see this electric hybrid car "initiative" as anything other than lip service.

I found this comment from the CEO of NRG interesting. Basically saying that electric cars would and should be the third leg of a stool that includes PV and smart meters.

PV has been cheaper than petrol on an equivalent energy basis for a while. I think the capital cost of the electric cars is the main issue to resolve as far as commuters are concerned.

That, and the need to put about 20 square metres (~4kW) of panels on your roof at a cost of about $7000 up front. ($1.25/Wp plus installation plus charge controller) - if you have the roof area pointing in the right direction.
