Re: Building Consent Costs, SWH and PV

Most people are dependent on energy companies - a true "off grid" system with no other inputs of diesel or gas is expensive. The trick is to use as little energy as possible for the greatest effect. Electricity is very useful stuff - not least that it just comes down a wire.
I don't see much use for a Greenglo cylinder above a stainless steel one. Seems a lot of expense for coils that aren't necessary.
Solar and/or a heat pump can be connected to a Coopers cylinder - at half the price.

Still doesn't answer the question why the World leaders in heating technology use coils. And it is illegal to operate systems without coils in many higher than NZ developed countries There are health risks if your tap water has been sitting luke warm in the solar panel for days during rainy periods. If your water is rich in lime or iron it leaves deposits in the solar panel with reduced efficiency and possible damage. Just two essential reasons why coils are the safer option rather than some experiments. Better be safe than sorry:-)

And if I have no power for three days I can still cook, bake, shower and heat. While my neighbour who has everything electrical with heat pumps and other stuff, is sitting in the cold...

Hi Magic Hair
The Greenglo would be fine for what you want to do - I suggest you read all the warranty exclusions and make sure you comply absolutely - not hard to do, but just be aware.
