Heating house using hot water cylinder and ventilation system
Posted 13 May 12 4:49 PM
Has anyone used the hot water cylinder to supply hot water to a radiator that is connected to a ventilation system. I have excess hot water due to the cylinder being connected to a wet back and being underutilised. Would envisage the radiator being about 2 metres abbove the cylinder and relying on a thermosyphen rather than pumping..

Go for it - it will work. However - you can't use a steel radiator - it will have to be aluminium if you don't have a coil fitted to the cylinder.

Why does it have to be aluminium and not steel?

Understand the reasoning behind steel as it would add heavy metals to the water stystem and would be prone to rusting. What about copper, as it is low pressure and it is near the head hight of the system anyway it would be very low preasure, I thought I could possibly use the likes of a intercooler radiator or suchlike from a car and box it up. The other thought I had was a simple coil inside an insulated box but not sure how much heat transfer I would get from it.. My thinking was that maybe slow and steady heat supply rathere than all at once??
Thanks for your thoughts

Yep, rust is the problem. As far as I am aware I don't think you are allowed steel products where potable water is involved.
If you want a thermosyphon system to work you will need reasonable surface areas. Small car stuff is all designed with large air flows in mind, no good for a house.
Sectional aluminium radiators would be OK, expensive and prone to leaking!

So cast iron is also out (I thought cast iron doesn't rust, but probably wouldn't be allowed to be used with potable water). What about copper as per Gary's post? You could probably use the insides of a flat plate solar collector (with the frame and glass removed) as a radiator?

The Radiator will be fitted to the intake of the air system and that is about 200mm dia so I cant have a large area. There will therefore be a reasonable air flow, just will be a question as to weather the small radiator will be enough to create a thermo?? Steel well we still have galvanised pipes comming into the house so think the poison side of things is well taken care of already!! but rust buildup would be a problem.. Question, how would one calculate the possible flow of the thermo syphen??

Obviously copper heat exchangers would be fine.
Sorry, didn't realize about the size restriction. You could in theory use some old car radiators - but not sure how you'd join them to water pipes and comply with all legal stuff.

Even the consideration of car radiators and tap water in one system is madness.
