There are three manufactures of HWHP that qualify for the grant.
All of them have a ceramic lined steel cylinder with a heat pump on top, and are intended to be fitted outdoors.
It appears that the manufactures of two of them suggest they shouldn't be installed in areas where the temperature drops below six degrees, (or zero when fitted with active defrost).
The cost of them is $5000-$5500 plus install - if they are fitted to an existing property you will also need a building consent. You could be looking at $8000 in total.

Actually there are at least two other manufactures that qualify for the grant scheme. But EECA are redeveloping their web site so the list is not being updated as quickly as it should.

I know that Hot Water Heat Pumps have one and Im fairly sure Econergy do to both of which qualify for the grant. Both are split systems and operate in low ambients.

Any decient system will be "fairly expensive", but probably cheaper than solar. There are some low quality ones around that do not comply with NZ standards and are therefore cheaper... but these systems will not have access to the grant scheme.

Yes, two more manufacturers qualifying for the grant - however I couldn't find the price of the hot water heat pump on their websites. So a $1000 rebate on what?

Hot Water Heat Pumps are a manufacturer that sell through a dealer network. Hence prices are not listed. Their dealer locator and phone numbers are easy to find on the site.
