Kapiti Grey Water recycling
Posted 19 Jun 09 9:24 PM
This is great news as long as the council don't also charge extra fees for installing such a system. They should also install water meters so giving a incentive to stop wasting water, expecially in the summer period.
This however will not solve the current annual water shortage problem in summer, if only installed on new houses then in 150 years time perhaps all houses will have them. The council must make it attractive for existing house owners to retro fit these systems along with rainwater tanks. Perhaps by offering a rates rebate if installed, after all if you are not using the water then why pay for it in your rates bill.
Currently the Kapiti council have no incentives for installing any eco-products, eg they still charge high consent fees to install solar hot water systems.
Its about time they walked the talk.

Agree that incentivising retrofitting greywater systems - a la the home insulation scheme - is a great idea. Based on projected rates one third of all Kapiti homes will be using greywater by 2050 (the current planning period) so development can help pay for development.

I'm disappointed that Kapiti Coast District Council did not allow for recycling greywater for toilet flushing as a permitted activity under the plan change. Combining toilet flushing with garden watering achieves the water reduction targets, but only requires one system, not a combination of greywater for irrigation and rainwater for toilet flushing. But just because it's not a permitted activity doesn't mean you can't do it as an alternative method, which the plan change does allow for. Even with the small fee to process the application, this is by far and away the cheapest and most efficient way to save water and comply with the requirements of the plan. Why have two systems when you can achieve the same results with one? Such a system has been available in NZ for 15 years: www.ecoplus.co.nz
