Forum/Website Suggestions
Posted 2 Mar 10 7:46 AM
There are many issues with confusion in and lack of flow from, forum-posts posted as "Anonymous".
My understanding is that this is because you can post to EcoBob without having to sign-up. I am a member of 20+ online communities and non of them allow anonymous postings.
Might EB consider scrapping Anonymous postings for the sake of clarity of discussion?
My other suggestion is to do with the Eco Home listings. When you view a specific home, the text is nicely formatted into paragraphs and lines. When you preview the home in a listing form a search for example, the lines and paragraphs don't show so the text doesn't flow or often make sense.
Could the preview text be changed to match the format when clicking-in to see a specific home please?
Many thanks :-) Russ

Hi Russ,
Thanks for the feedback. We will look into a better way of posting on the forums and hopefully be able to get something developed to improve this. Perhaps as simple as disallowing annoymous postings.
Also, I will see if we can do something about the Eco Home listing search results.
Regards,
Ecobob

I would like to second Russ's comments about anonymous postings.
There are a lot of people who make very definitive statements in various forum topics but without them being prepared to post their name and a profile or some credentials to back what they are saying it is difficult to give these statements any credibility.
Also I know of some very knowledgeable people who do not post on here any more because what they say is often attacked by less knowledgeable people hiding under the anonymous tag.
I believe that requiring everybody to log in would produce more open, better reasoned debate.

Dean phptek and Ecobob,
I have made this observation before and support this change as it will lift the tone of conversation and mainly eliminate 'slagging off one liners'.
However, as a poster of contentious comment, I would not agree with full name discloser, as when I once offerred (without fear), my full name on another forum, I was tracked down and received emaill death threats - boy do some extreme AGW alarmists take their religion sreiously!

I agree,
Logging in would at least allow users to track comments and reply to a point made by a specific user rather than using the cumbersome "Anon @ 10:55" method. Rex, I dont think Russ is suggesting a full name and address details, just a user name and maybe a brief profile.

Hi Ecobob
With logins, the time allowed for posting could possibly be looked at - often it takes me so long to post that by the time I finish, the system has dropped me out so the post becomes "anon" again. That's one reason why I don't bother logging in anymore and just sign the posts.

Hi Seeker,
I have changed the 'timeout' to 4 hours so that should be plenty of time to write your posts!
Please let me know if you have any problems with it timing out still and I will investigate.
Kind regards,
Ecobob

Hi Rex
Email death threats for voicing your opinion? Crikey, I'll bet their grandfathers/ great grandfathers sailed half way around the world in the first half of last century to fight for the freedom for all of us to express our opinions.
It is sad when people close their minds to reasoned debate and refuse to believe anything other than what they have already invested in. There is no hope of progress that way.

This has become almost essential as it's virtually impossible to work out who's saying what and also means you can't PM people with any questions. If this isn't changed soon then I think the Forum will dwindle to nothing and that would be a great shame

Apologies to you Langers and others:
In many instances who I am does not matter to the debate, so I post anonymously - perhaps even to get a reaction. When I am posting on a topic on which I am an expert, or am seeking the advice from the many experts on this site, I usually post my screen name.
I like this site, am happy to see the anon posts continue. The experts are quite easy to identify in any case, and the anon posts obviously don't want engagement.
