Anyone used Rainline or their Hydrocycle?
Posted 15 Sep 10 9:41 PM
Hi folks,
After another post here on EB I was convinced on using a Hydrocycle 4000 whole-house membrane filtration unit from Rainline in Auckland instead of UV.
Almost immediately we had issues with the unit leaking. It would be fine for days and then it would dump a load of water all over the floor. We called the plumber who tightened everything up but it continued to leak.
We contacted Byron at Rainline who, after some tracking down we managed to get to send some replacement O-rings.
After waiting some weeks for the new parts the plumber tried to insert them but discovered they were the wrong gauge and that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the existing O-rings anyway.
I had a go at removing and re-assembling the end cap of the Hydrocycle myself from where the leaks would come and it was sweet for about a week - the longest dry-period yet, and then the same happened again.
I called the plumber in again and we ensured his pipework was true to the end of the unit (The unit relies on pressure from the pipework and a simple clasp to keep it together, a slight deviation from true causes the end-cap to not fit correctly and presumably to allow water to collect there and eventually leak - why it isn't a screwcap is beyond us)
Having been taken apart by now on several occasions, the plastic screwcap that joins the large flat end-cap to the pipework was showing signs of strain (white strain marks around the rim) and sure enough upon tightening this time, the screwcap split and water sprayed up the wall.
Note: The screwcap is inevitably put under strain by a pipe-wrench and is under pressure from mains water - it should really therefore be made from metal, not ABS plastic!
At the moment we are without post micron filtration for our home (on tank water) and the plumber has redirected water around the unit until I can either get it or the part replaced.
Has anyone had any less than positive dealings with rainline? Better - do you have a Hydrocycle 4000 you want to share your experiences with!?
Best of all, I called rainline last week who told me our particular model has been withdrawn from sale due to similar customer complaints..
I have contacted them again just now and will post any findings/updates I receive.
Cheers Russ

Sure, will do. They are due to send replacement parts, I'll see how we go.

Update: We have now been without a filter for about a month and Rainline have now promised to send a complete replacement unit which sounds great.
I'll let you know how we go.

OK a bit late, but the replacement was a dud (in as much as it inherits the exact same design-flaws) and caused $$ of damage to carpet which required expert help. Rainline sent an updated model which has been sweet ever since (18+ months) .
