we are looking at installing a wetback fire. how far at a maximum can you put your cylinder from your fire and do the pipes from the fire to cylinder have to run up from the fire or can you run them down and under the floor to the cylinder?

You have to mount the bottom of the cylinder above the exit pipe fittings on the fire. All pipes must have a continuous upward gradient 1 :10 or less; no exceptions, else they will trap air bubbles and block the thermo syphon flow. I wouldn't go beyond 3 meters without mechanical assistance (pump).
