Cross between HWHP and solar panel?
Posted 8 Mar 11 3:57 PM
Sorry if this has been raised before, but does anyone have any thoughts on this Portugese system that seems to be a cross between a HWHP and a solar panel?
It's touted for heating hot water and central heating

I saw a floor store system once. The pipe was spaced between 400-800mm apart in the slab. Needless to say the system didn't work.

Looks like it is a form of heat pump that is utilising an absorbtive panel rather than pumping air through a radiator type evaporator. The efficiency will depend on the amount of light and the outside temperature. It will reach a point where the energy required to pump the gas around will exceed the heat gathered from the environment.
My pick is that this system will work better on hot, sunny days than at any other time. When do you need the heat? On hot, sunny days? OK if you are managing to store that heat somehow. Night performance is likely to be less than that from a conventional radiator style heat pump.
