Pleased to announce that Government grants are now available when installing a heat pump water heater into your primary place of residence.

The grant is a $575 cashback paid upon installation of the product. Limited numbers are available.

Why such a limited choice?
Do manufacturers have to pay to get on the scheme/be assessed?
If so isn't it a bit suspect then?
Presumably its for a package not just for a heat pump as the table has cylinder sizes? Would you still get the grant if you only wanted a heat pump?
Why are so many of the offerings unsuitable for low ambient air temperature?
Poor warranty length?
Why are numbers limited? Why is the scheme limited to primary place of residence?

Sorry EECA - 2/10 poor effort try harder next time.

In fact I'm bloody annoyed that my hard earned tax dollar goes to some civil servant drongo in producing this sort of rubbish - fume !!!

Pete,

Understand your frustrations, however at least there is a HPWH grants scheme now. Up until recently there was only official schemes for SWH.

The reality is that there is extremely limited funding available due to the recession, and now the double whammy in CHCH. Its not enough but at least it is a start and something is better than nothing.

The scheme is open to all manufacturers and importers, and there is no fee to get approved, so is completely equal opportunity.

OK let's put those heatpumps into every house and we will need much more coal mining and eventually Nuke power to keep it all running.
And then the excuse will be we can't afford to change every house. Very very short sighted this heat pump madness and their lifespan is also a very questionable point. And the disposal.
Really a bad idea to subsidse those with tax payers money. And if we need more coal and gas power stations for winter backup it's the tax payer again

Guess what, i don't agree.
Most water heating in NZ is your standard electric cylinder.
Changing each one of those the a heat pump will save 60%+ of the power previously consumed. Unlike the 'hairdryer' type room heating heat pumps which DO result in increased power consumption due to folk cranking them up summer and winter.
Further you can fit a HWHP to an otherwise uninsulated inefficient house and get real savings 24/7.
I do agree however that the lifespan issues are a concern.

I don't say that making hot water with a hot water heat pump isn't more efficient than a HWC but I don't think tax payers money should be used for it.

but solar systems (some with glycol) are ok to have a grant? And a grant is ok for gas? And a grant is ok for everything else except a heat pump? And you would rather have big coal power plants? Nuclear power is great, we should get that.

Nothing with less than 20 years servicable life should see a cent of grant and unless they give 20 years warranty definitly not heat pumps.

Firstly it is nice to see the goverment acknowledge hot water heat pumps, and that where compliments end.
There is very limited funding over the period, which really does not excite industry.
The grant scheme was influenced by a major player and by how the Aussi brothers apply the technology.
I believe that on average hot water heat pumps will give the greatest energy saving to country as a whole. "yes in some circamstances solar is great", but I think that the right technology should be applied to the right application. Heat pumps do suit the larger users of hot water normally families.
Back to grant, for a product to be eligiable testing is required and this cost money (i am not against perfromance testing) how ever the test methods are flawed and are based around a aussi solar model, the method also leans to a type of technology with at the fundemental priniciple is not the most efficient. "commercial influence".
The enrty level in to the grant scheme is very low, "commercial influence"
One of the main arguments is the reciprical deal between Aus and NZ (if it can be sold one country it can be sold in the other)
At a refrigeration engineering level, increases efficiency means increased relability and life expectensy. By allowing such a low entry level, some of the point above become more valid.
The grant scheme does not allow for innovation nor does it allow for better performing products to shine. I did suggest a staggered scheme, the greater the efficiency the bigger the grant, and in my opinion was easily managed as testing has to be completed in the first place. But yet again commercial influence came into play, where the major boys who have poor performing machines would be penalised. These boys do have the marketting budget, so their badly performing, unrealible machines will be the one that most purchase. The average mum and dad do not understand the complexity of a refrigeration system and are relying on EECA for best advice, knowingly or unknowingly they are not giving it, a good oppotunity lost!!!????

Guess you can argue endlessly who should get what. I think the best way would be no subsidies for anything but to increase the required performance and efficiency level of all components of a building. That way competion gets fair and nobody gets away with expensive poor standard products no matter whether big or small company.

G W, you maybe right you maybe wrong, but if you want significant change, then this has to be driven from the top, you can either use or a stick, and make everybody change, or use the carrot and influence change "the grant". World wide the green industry is driven by grants or incentives, thats how it is. How these are applied should be the issue, If this driven by a goverment then the goverments priority should be to the people, not to commercial enterprises, with better procedures you would find that a balance would occur between efficiency, price and companies would move to meet the changing demand equalibrium. At present any old shyte will do,
