Built into the hillside facing north west, in a sheltered bowl from most prevailing winds. The house looks over a reserve and out towards the southern alps. The design is double envelope passive solar. Built with an earth berm into the hillside double glazing all round apart from the solar collector at the front of the house. The Double envelope allows for heat from the solar collector to pass through channels and vents in the roof space and down a chimney space at the rear of the house. There are concrete t beams under the house creating more channels for heated air to pass under, heating the concrete mass, this creates a convective loop which is assisted by thermostatically controlled fans. In the summer there are to large vents operated by pneumatic rams also controlled by thermostat that open to expel unwanted heat.
