Home for over 14 years now and have just moved my design office back home using the study and one bedroom upstairs. In the last 3 years my partner and I have created extensive organic vege gardens and planted some fruit trees all of which covers almost all available space that was just growing long grass before on this small steep section in Nelson East. We are located within a couple of hundred metres to the 'Centre of NZ' with views over the city and lower Maitai Valley. In the last year I have installed a kiwi bog composting toilet, rainwater collection tanks and a recycled grey water system used for the flush toilet and garden irrigation. We also have a 10 sq m greenhouse built from salvaged timber for $200 and heated on winter nights with a salvaged solar panel hooked up to an old copper hot water cylinder to store hot water thermal mass during the day and radiate warmth at night to extend growing seasons.
The house is passive solar tempered but contains no significant thermal mass as its a pole house. Back up radiant heating is by a marble panel heater from EMH and the hot water is heated by a Sola 60 flat panel on the roof. The house frame is all untreated douglas fir and all the insulation is 100% wool from Latitude now in Christchurch but originally from Nelson. The cladding is Onduline which is made from 50% recycled cardboard and is cheap and durable. Internal trim and linings is all macrocarpa, Lawsons Cypress and recycled rimu with all doors hand made T&G, ledge and brace.
I am currently preparing the home as an Urban Eco Homestay for paying guests who wish to experience these features and learn about sustainable lifestyles etc. The organic gardens will be available to pick from to create ones own meal with ample salad veges, potatoes, corn, tomatoes, zuccini, pumpkins, broccoli, beans, peas, beetroot, and lots more available. The whole lower floor with deck, main living, master bedroom, kitchen, dining, bathroom and laundry will be let on a daily basis. A vegetarian banquet for two will be available on request (no meat allowed) and local organic wines will also be available to purchase. Massage is also offered at the homestay by my partner who is a professional massage therapist in Nelson. A website and brochure is being prepared and more photos will be uploaded soon. We look forward to making you welcome!
