US military prepares for Peak Oil

Posted 19 Oct '11 05:44 AM

US military knows the score - America's military is actively planning for peak oil and its F 16s will be able to run on biofuels by 2013, Bloomberg reports.

“Reliance on fossil fuels is simply too much of a vulnerability for a military organization to have,” U.S. Navy Secretary Raymond Mabus said in an interview. “We’ve been certifying aircraft on biofuels. We’re doing solar and wind, geothermal, hydrothermal, wave, things like that on our bases.”

The armed forces say they’ve been successful testing fuels produced from sources as diverse as animal fat, frying oils and camelina, an oil-bearing plant that’s relatively drought- and freeze-resistant.

It seems to me that the US military have a number of things back to front here.

The price of alternative biofuels will remain linked (and more expensive) than conventional hydrocarbon fuels due to amount of oil derived inputs that are required to grow, fertilise, harvest and process most biofuels. Conventional fuel prices will inevitably head skyward but so will biofuels which are under economic pressures from shortages in both oil and global food supplies.

Many of the US military's activities internationally are focussed on oil producing nations. They are at risk of losing security of fuel supplies if they withdraw from these conflicts but according to the OP article they are finding it increasingly prohibitively expensive to maintain these military efforts. Damned if they do and damned if they don't?

A complete mindshift is required to cope with the energy crisis that is looming ever closer and providing a few PV panels and LED lamps to US Marines in Afganistan while they continue to drive around the countryside in HumVees is nothing but lip service to the problem!
