The importance of insulation

Whether you are a home-owner or a professional Architect, all of us are trying ways to improve our homes. For many homes in New Zealand, there is one word that symbolizes a good place to start: “Insulation”.Two important kinds of insulation exist when you build your eco-house:
- Thermal insulation
- Sound insulation

Thermal insulation:
In winter, the heater would need to work less hard to heat the house, because the insulation keeps the warmth inside. In summer, the opposite happens: less outside heat would enter in your house. Naturally, tanks to that, insulation can enable us to spend less money on energy and electricity bills.

That said, be aware of the interaction between insulation levels and the orientation of your windows. It can be a costly exercise to upgrade windows to thermally broken double glazing… so for those who don’t have that kind of money, look to invest in good quality thermal curtains and be sure to draw them as soon as the sun goes down in winter. In summer you have to try and avoid sun coming in, so if you have a window that is particularly problematic then you might want to consider some external shading (external blinds, trees, awnings, etc) to prevent the summer sun from overheating your house.

Additional benefits of thermal insulation include reduced risk of condensation in the home, helping reduce damp and mold. Some people are sensitive to mold, and exposure to damp and moldy environments may cause a variety of health effects: nasal stuffiness, throat irritation, coughing or wheezing, eye irritation, or, in some cases, skin irritation. Insulation can help reduce these kind of health issues.

Sound insulation:
Insulation absorbs sound to reduce noise generated by appliances and people. It prevents sound from being transmitted through the walls or the floors of your home. Sound insulation can help relieve the stress brought on by unwanted noise and gives you enough privacy and is therefore a good choice to improve personal comfort in the home.

If you are thinking renovating your house or building your own house and if you want to make your place more pleasant with lower energy bills, you should consider adding insulation.
